There has been a huge wave of AI generated art in the last few months. I'll be the first to say it does incredible things and I've seen some amazing results people have shared. I've tinkered with it myself on an image or two and I've been on the whole impressed by what these AI packages have been able to produce. The question... is what an AI creates, art?

Of course it is. Art can be achieved by all manner of methods and media and this software is creating images that explore all manner of subjects, forms and expressions. The more apt question... if someone is using an AI to create art. Should they claim it as their own?

No.

In my mind, the AI software is the artist, not the person who gave it the parameters to use as a guide. In a very real sense, AI software fills the role of a Virtual Commission. Just like a client commissioning a human artist, they tell us what they want. They give us parameters and descriptions of what they'd like us to create. We may do a few revisions to narrow it down to what they're wanting, but eventually the artwork in done and they take possession, but they merely told us what they were hoping to have created. It is our skill and imagination that creates the art. Following the client's guidelines, yes, but the creation is borne from the artist, many times in ways the client didn't expect, but they enjoy none the less. That is exactly what role AI software is fulfilling. A person using it is not creating art, but directing the AI to create art for them. Is there anything wrong with that? Absolutely not. The only caveat to that is when someone has a beautiful piece of AI generated art and says 'look what I made.' That person provided the criteria, but just as sure as if it were a human artist they hired, the AI is the one that went through the creative process. I've seen people posting all manner of wonderful images, and I've enjoyed seeing each and every one. Sometimes in the description they will mention it is AI created or give it an AI tag, but not much more than that. Others will post, claiming as their own. In my mind that's a misrepresentation. Whether it's not considered or deliberate, that's on the individual. I just wanted to bring up what I see is as the distinction of not whether or not it's art, but who the real artist is, and who should be credited as such.

Thank you for your time and I hope your consideration,

John

Hello my friends,

I've been away far too long.  All manner of things in the Real World getting in my way, plus after all these years I guess I didn't want to admit I needed a break.  I tried to peek in when I could and any comments or notes I did my best to make a reply, but for the longest time the drive wasn't there.  To make matters worse I just watched my notification count climb higher and higher to the point there were so many it didn't matter if I responded or not, which of course also bummed me out.  So a few moments ago, almost on impulse, I did what I was telling myself I should do for months.   I wiped the slate clean.  17,000+ notifications erased and now starting fresh.  Even so, apologies are in order...

To all my friends who have posted such wonderful art at this point by the dozens that I was not able to favorite or show my support, I sincerely apologize for not being there to show my affection for your fantastic talents.  Missing so much of the beauty you all share is my deepest regret.  I am going to try and explore and catch up, but there were so many I missed, please forgive me if I fail to discover them all.

To the groups I've followed and likewise have shirked supporting fellow members as well as contributing my own works, I likewise apologize for my inactivity and laziness.

To the 200+ people who over the past year or so have thought I was worthy of your attention and are watching my galleries, I humbly thank you for your interest in my simple works and I hope they've brought you pleasure, in spite of my recent stagnation.

To all those who have shown Favoritism to my works and added them to their own collections, I also thank you deeply and I'm sorry I failed to say so at the time and doubly sorry if anyone sent me a comment and I failed to reply.  It was unintentional.

I'm hoping this means I can say I'm getting back into the swing of things.  I'll be trying to update my gallery with new works as they come and I'm open to take on commissions.   Thank you my friends for all you do and share and the support you've given to me and others, and I apologize for not giving back in kind for so long.  Love to you all

It's tax time again, so I'm not only opening up for more commissions, but they're on sale :) Scenes with multiple characters or complex scenes are the same price as my basic single character rate... $30 for everything!  If the scene is extraordinarily busy or more than two or three characters then we'll treat it as two pics (so $60) but generally it'll fit into the basic sale price per pic.  Feel free to send me a note and we'll discuss what you need.  Happy to do multiple pics in series.  Looking forward to working with you :)

Hello all!   My trip to enjoy my birthday with exploring all things Wizard at the Harry Potter resort down at Universal Studios Orlando regrettably had to be pushed back a couple weeks.  Instead of leaving tomorrow, I won't be going until the 17th of this month.  On the bright side that gives me more time to generate a bit more traveling cash so I've extended my commission drive until the 15th!!

As before, I'm offering a deal on my commissions.  Normally my rates are $30 for a basic portrait or simple action scene with limited background, but scenes involving complex settings and/or multiple characters generally go at a $30/hour rate (where most pics fall in the 2 to 3 hour range).  For this drive all commissions will be at the basic rate.  A complex scene will be the cost as a basic scene during this drive.  Of course this is within reason.  If you're needing an epic scene that's going to take several hours to do then I'll still be happy to do it, but it will need to wait until I get back (and at the regular rates).  I of course do not charge for rendering time. You shouldn't pay for the speed of my computer (or lack thereof)... only the time I'm physically working on the artwork. Transactions via Paypal.

Thanks!! :) (Smile)

Hello all!

In two weeks it's my birthday, and I've decided to treat myself by going on vacation.  It's going to be a bit tricky as it's also impending tax time, so in order to lighten the financial strain I wanted to let peoples know between now and then I'll be trying to crank through as many commissions as I can.  I'm also cutting a deal...
